Quirks Behind the Music - Northern Horizon

I caught up with pop-punk group Northern Horizon, discussing everything from the highs and lows of life in a band to making ace cups of tea.

Describe your music with one word?
Um that's a difficult one, I think that we can't really be summed up.... Uh how about "fabulous" - Robbie

Why did you call yourself 'Northern Horizon'?
Well, originally we were called some strange obscure name which we felt was...a bit too original so we then changed it to 'A Vertical Horizon’. This then raised the question of how a horizon can be vertical... That and the name was already taken by some small local band who played Woodstock or something... Understatement much! So once more we changed it and finally settled for Northern Horizon. Of course, the rest of the band would usually say how we were out in a storm and the Northern Lights guided us home or something like that... -Steve

Who are your musical heroes and influences?
Well, personally I'd say Gary Moore. I've always had a soft spot for blues music, especially Gary. I mean, I was brought up on Thin Lizzy and Irish rock, so I kinda have to love him. He actually influences how I play too, however subtle it might be. Especially branches considering its a blues song. Jake's is Billie Joe Armstrong, no questions asked. Steve's I'm pretty sure changes weekly, maybe Ricky Wilson this week? Robbie doesn't have one because he's a massive hipster and its too mainstream. And Tom's, is probably Bastien from Chunk! because I've converted him to EZ from All Time Low - Mitch

What's your favourite part and what's the hardest part of being in a band?
My favourite part of being in a band is probably the fact that I get to walk around and receive the occasional glance from a passer-by which suggests that they're thinking, 'hey...I recognise you from somewhere' but don't recognise me enough to actually start a conversation. Yeah, I like that. It's like Batman or something.
The hardest part of being in a band is that I am basically the manager. I have to organise the group. Like, I don't even know how I do it... But then again, the hardest part for the rest of them is probably to be organised by me... - Steve

Excluding your instruments and vocals, what roles do individuals in the band take on?
Well Steve does everything important because he's basically got a degree in the music industry. Personally I'm ace at making tea. - Robbie

What was the first and last album or gig ticket you bought?
The first ticket I ever bought was to Green Day at Wembley in like 2010 (still my favourite gig to date) and the last on I bought was for NOFX and Alkaline trio, but that hasn't happened yet - Jake

Out of all your songs, which one is your personal favourite?
Personally my favourite song is Miss Hopeless, it turned out better than I ever expected in the recording and we've had nothing but positive feedback. Only 3 unlikes on YouTube grrrr. It's a really catchy song, love the lyrics and I love playing it. - Tom

Biggest musical achievement to date?
Mitch: Beating Steve at worms. Hands down, no questions asked, no explanation needed.
Steve: Biggest musical achievement to date!
Mitch: Writing a song about beating Steve at worms.
Steve: We have?
Mitch: I am.
Steve: Oh...
Mitch: That is my biggest achievement.

Which locals bands have caught your attention?
Quite a few local bands have caught our attention like High Anthem, Pacific View and Alterverse - Jake

What does the future hold for Northern Horizon?
The future for us should be very bright, we've got some brand new songs to be announced and released, stuff that'll make people jump and smile. We will also be travelling much more outside of Newcastle and connecting with more people around the UK. This should be our summer. - Tom

The dynamic group are also playing at the O2 Academy in Newcastle, supporting High Anthem, along with Annex Vacation.

Track of the Week - Sarajevo - The K's

Merseyside natives The K's kicked off 2018 by announcing that they had been signed to Republic Music Management. With a handful of sold-out headline shows already under their belt, their tongue-and-cheek indie tunes are earning them a loyal fan base and plenty of buzz. Their debut single 'Sarajevo' is an infectiously catchy and utterly charming track. The vocals are akin to a more in-tune Jamie T, giving their witty lyrics a warm ambiance.  The upbeat melody gives a nod to early 2000s indie, but the ferocious riffs and hearty bass lines give it plenty of originality.  The track has already achieved half a million streams on Spotify and it's a sure bet that there's bigger and better things on the horizon for The K's. 'YOUR TRIP BEGINS NOW' - THE FROOT '67 E.P. REVIEW

'Your trip begins now' is the latest four track E.P. from Hull's finest pysche rock outfit: The Froot '67.  As the name would suggest, the group's roots are planted within dynamic 60's rock and the band have revitalised this era through their bold, gritty sound. The E.P. opens with 'Chaos Theory', a track that is fuelled by frantic and beefy lo-fi riffs, whilst Newby's vocals take a more subtle, nonchalant route. Despite being a psyche rock track, the overall sound of the song reminds me of a more reserved version of 'Gravedweller' by The Wytches. It's a very different sound to their debut album; '7 past 8'; but this grungier edge is definitely a good thing for the group. It's broadening their sound without destroying the unique vibe they've already established for themselves. Plus, it;s a really engaging opening to the E.P. and sets a raw, and somewhat brooding, ambiance for the E.P. The following track, 'I don...

Middlesbrough Pub Bans Female Fronted Bands

Middlesbrough pub and rock music venue; Doctor Brown's ; has caused outrage after implementing a ban on female fronted bands, stating their customers believe that women can't sing rock music well. The story gained national attention after The Northern Echo published a damning article on the situation.  Consequently, residents and musicians have started to boycott the venue. I contacted Doctor Brown's to hear their side of the story. Had the situation been blown out of proportion on social media, or were outdated, sexist attitudes being called out? Paula Rees, the pub's manager cited that the Northern Echo had lied and "twisted her words" and she was eager to talk to me to "set the record straight". She said that was more than happy to talk, asking me to ring up later when the pub was a little quieter. Rees also confessed that she wasn't a "big rock fan" and was just going with what her customers wanted, stating that they had...
