Hello All,

My name is Sal Wilcox, I'm a journalist and music blogger based in Newcastle and Leeds.

I'm currently studying Journalism at Leeds Beckett University, where I am the President of the Journalism Society and head of the student radio and podcast. I also write content for the University website, Leeds Hacks.

Before going to university, I was a contributor for NE Volume, NE:MM, Savage Thrills, Spotlight Music UK and Festibl. In addition to this, I have had a feature article published in Rock 'N' Roll Bride magazine.

 I am a founder member of 'Nouveau Gigs', where I was responsible for  booking acts, events promotion and finance. This was a business venture, promoting young talent in my local area.

When I'm not writing, you'll probably find me in a micro-pub with a craft ale or G&T in my hand or at a market looking for a weird and wonderful bargain.

Track of the Week - Sarajevo - The K's

Merseyside natives The K's kicked off 2018 by announcing that they had been signed to Republic Music Management. With a handful of sold-out headline shows already under their belt, their tongue-and-cheek indie tunes are earning them a loyal fan base and plenty of buzz. Their debut single 'Sarajevo' is an infectiously catchy and utterly charming track. The vocals are akin to a more in-tune Jamie T, giving their witty lyrics a warm ambiance.  The upbeat melody gives a nod to early 2000s indie, but the ferocious riffs and hearty bass lines give it plenty of originality.  The track has already achieved half a million streams on Spotify and it's a sure bet that there's bigger and better things on the horizon for The K's. Documentary: Grass Root - How music cities are saving grass root music venues

Last year, I had the pleasure of going around the UK creating an audio documentary for my degree's final project. I looked into how music city organisations are helping to preserve independent music venues in the UK, and the cultural significance of these bijoux venues. I thought it was an apt time to release this documentary, as many venues in the UK are currently struggling due to lockdown. The documentary explores the issues that venues have faced over the last decade, from high business rates to changes in planning laws. It can be difficult for these vital cultural hubs to stay open, without having to deal with the repercussions of a global pandemic. The Music Venue Trust has joined forces with venues across the nation, in a bid to make sure that they can keep their doors open and the music blasting post-lockdown. Middlesbrough Pub Bans Female Fronted Bands

Middlesbrough pub and rock music venue; Doctor Brown's ; has caused outrage after implementing a ban on female fronted bands, stating their customers believe that women can't sing rock music well. The story gained national attention after The Northern Echo published a damning article on the situation.  Consequently, residents and musicians have started to boycott the venue. I contacted Doctor Brown's to hear their side of the story. Had the situation been blown out of proportion on social media, or were outdated, sexist attitudes being called out? Paula Rees, the pub's manager cited that the Northern Echo had lied and "twisted her words" and she was eager to talk to me to "set the record straight". She said that was more than happy to talk, asking me to ring up later when the pub was a little quieter.
