Track Review - New York Tourists 'Skinny Dipping'

'Skinny Dipping' is the latest single from Blackburn indie group New York Tourists . The band are set to release a video for the track this Friday. The track opens with a pulsing beat, coated in an ambient layer of synth before welcoming front man Gaz Taylor's honeyed vocals. The hook of: "I want to strip down to nothing, strip down to nothing, with you", gives the track the 'sing along' factor and cements it as a happy go lucky tune. The song is an undeniably catchy, easy listen but it just needs a bit more oomph. The production of the track isn't great - the guitar riffs just linger in the background and it needs a richer, bolder bass line. However, the song definitely has a lot of potential and there's some interesting counter melodies throughout the track - but it needs to be nurtured into a bigger, more powerful sound. The band know how to create a tune, they just need to focus on producing a more well-rounded, full bodied sound.

Track of the Week - Sarajevo - The K's

Merseyside natives The K's kicked off 2018 by announcing that they had been signed to Republic Music Management. With a handful of sold-out headline shows already under their belt, their tongue-and-cheek indie tunes are earning them a loyal fan base and plenty of buzz. Their debut single 'Sarajevo' is an infectiously catchy and utterly charming track. The vocals are akin to a more in-tune Jamie T, giving their witty lyrics a warm ambiance.  The upbeat melody gives a nod to early 2000s indie, but the ferocious riffs and hearty bass lines give it plenty of originality.  The track has already achieved half a million streams on Spotify and it's a sure bet that there's bigger and better things on the horizon for The K's. Gig Review - Double Denim Live Presents: The Atoms, Turbulence and Ladies - Photos by Alethea Shephard

Double Denim Live returned to Verve Bar on Saturday 27th January, hosting a night of music from local Leeds and Liverpool based bands. Kicking the night off was Merseyside trio  Ladies . Their sound was fuelled by a cocktail of 60s rock and 00s indie influences, giving it an preppy catchiness. Bold bass lines gave their music a nice depth and their front man's vocals possessed a sweet, wholesome charm. Unfortunately their stage presence was a little static and they need to engage with the crowd more. However, they did mention that they were all a little under the weather, which may explain their somewhat tame performance. Up next was Liverpudlian three piece  Turbulence  -  a quintessential guitar rock group with a beefy bass backbone. Tickling hints of classic indie gave their sound an upbeat edge, whilst the snarling vocals added a suave air to their music. They radiated a really big, impressive sound for a three piece. No frills, just loud energetic indie rock tu

Track of the Week: $pend $ome Tim€ - $lick king

'$pend $ome Tim€' is the latest release from Newcastle solo artist $lick king a.k.a.: Callum Casey. Casey is renowned for composing pieces that are satires of alternative genres, creating catchy tunes that incorporate muzac themes and pairing them with farcical music videos. He has described the song as: "a bunch of 'indie cool kid' music clichés thrown together. It's a basically Chamber of Reflection by Mac DeMarco, Boredom by Tyler the Creator and Tame Impala all blended together". The track opens with a simple, twinkling synth riff, before welcoming a disco beat and mellow vocals. It's the ultimate 'chill in the bath' track. It's an easy listen with a heavy 80s influence that gives it an upbeat catchiness and an endearing warmth that'll make you want to smile and bop along.
