Gig Review - Beyond the Wall Presents: PLAZA with support from HEIST and Dose 5/8/16

LAST FRIDAY BEYOND THE WALL  HOSTED:  PLAZA WITH SUPPORT FROM HEIST AND DOSE AT THE TYNEMOUTH SURFCAFE

Kicking the cram packed night off was shoegaze group Dose. The effort the young group went to in order to play the night was admirable, rearranging vocalists and drummers due to unfortunate illness and absences.
Despite not being fond of Shoegaze, I could appreciate their sound - fuelled by intricate guitar, powerful drums and one of the largest pedal boards I've ever seen.
My only suggestion is that they should incorporate some beefier hooks or bass lines and maybe turn up the vocals so that you can actually hear what they're singing.

Next up was Heist, filling the room with their indie meets funk sound. The group fashioned fast, bold beats and suave vocals . The highlight of their set was their track: 'Floor Light Flickers', an ebullient, track that got everyone in the room dancing along.
Unfortunately, the recorded version (linked below) just doesn't do the dynamic group justice. However I can envisage this band doing well in the local scene - but please ensure the next single is mixed a little better.

Finally PLAZA took to the stage, enlivening the crowd with their catchy post-indie sound. The band combine intricate guitar, suave, lilting vocals,  punchy percussion and Herculean drops, creating an unique and interesting sound.

The group went from strength to strength, delivering high-energy, ballsy tracks and witty banter in between. The crowd was constantly entertained, whether they were laughing at front man Bradley Lennard's 'Pokemon Go' jokes or being encompassed in their rich sound or watching band members climb up various pieces of furniture (whilst playing!).
The energy and apparent passion for performing elevated their set making it a night of both great music and great laughs.

Track of the Week - Sarajevo - The K's

Merseyside natives The K's kicked off 2018 by announcing that they had been signed to Republic Music Management. With a handful of sold-out headline shows already under their belt, their tongue-and-cheek indie tunes are earning them a loyal fan base and plenty of buzz. Their debut single 'Sarajevo' is an infectiously catchy and utterly charming track. The vocals are akin to a more in-tune Jamie T, giving their witty lyrics a warm ambiance.  The upbeat melody gives a nod to early 2000s indie, but the ferocious riffs and hearty bass lines give it plenty of originality.  The track has already achieved half a million streams on Spotify and it's a sure bet that there's bigger and better things on the horizon for The K's. Red Rum Club with Support From Tiger Twins, Paradas and Turnstones

Last night Liverpudlian six-piece Red Rum Club enthralled a lively crowd at Leeds' Lending Room. Kicking the night off was Leeds based four-piece Turnstones . Unfortunately, the majority of their set was timid and unimpressive. Their songs were pleasant enough, just very safe sounding, and they looked painfully awkward on stage. However the last two tracks of their set were fantastic -they skyrocketed from blasé to ballsy. They engaged more with the audience and came out of their shells - it was like watching a completely different band. They need to scrap the first section of their set and focus on creating songs like the last two. Up next was local group Paradas . Their front man had a dreamy rock tone, akin to Kings of Leon's Caleb Followill, with an admirable vocal range. His lilting vocals complimented the gritty classic rock inspired riffs, giving their sound a rich depth. Occasionally their riffs were a bit repetitive, so it'd be interesting to see some ...
