For the readers who aren't familiar with you, tell us a little about yourself and your music.
I've been making music for about two years under my own name, however in November last year I start Palm Beach as a side project. But I became so in love with the music me and Parker created and now it's a full on band, I hope to stick with this for the future,
We're a two piece surf rock band from Wallsend and we're very loud and energetic - people seem to have a lot of fun at our shows
Which musicians have had the greatest impact on both your musical tastes and your music?
The bands that influence Palm Beach for me is based around the whole California music scene - so bands like WAVVES, Fidlar, Best Coast etc. However if we're talking old school bands, then it has to be Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and I guess The Cure has been a big influence lately too.
What's the most difficult part of being in a band? Is there anything you regret or would have done differently?
I don't think we've came across anything difficult yet since we started Palm Beach - except the fact either one of us (mostly me) seems to get a tad drunk before going on stage, it makes things very awkward. Maybe I should cut down before I go on stage in future
Which of your songs is your favourite to play live?
We both love all of the songs because they're all so energetic. But if I had to pick one song it would probably be 'Flowers'.
It's one of the only slower songs that we do and all of our "fans" or whatever seem to sing along to and know all the words - which is a cool feeling when you're on stage! I'm very proud of that song. OH WE DONA SICK WAVVES COVER TOO WHICH WE'LL BE OPENING WITH AT THE NOUVEAU SHOW ON AUGUST 11TH!
If you could play any instrument in any band, who+what would you choose and why?
Saxophone. I don't even need to explain myself just... ITS THE FUCKING SAX - they sound like the first time you ever had fruit or something, just so sexual...
You've been gigging quite a lot recently. Which gig has been your favourite to play?
We did a show at Central Bar in Gateshead back in May - it was so crazy. People were climbing up the speakers and I ended up climbing them myself at one point, I crowd surfed whilst playing too which was cool - I felt like a gangster or something I dunno. All our friends and stuff came to that show too so it was extra special.
How has your sound evolved since you started out?
I don't think it's really evolved - we're quite set when it comes to the songs we write. Our songs are getting longer though which is good. We used to play 30 minute sets and somehow manage to fit like 16 songs into it.
But we've managed to lengthen a lot of the songs so that's good. When I made music on my own before Palm Beach it was just cringey little songs that had no meaning, I'm glad I grew out of that phase!
Which local acts have caught your eye?
All of our friends are in bands so there's quite a few, Static Castles are my closest friends and they're amazing, The Pale White are amazing too I'm very good friends with both Jack and Adam - they're way too talented. There's too many to name I guess - the Newcastle music scene is getting better and better.
So later this month your playing Nouveau Gig's fourth event Supporting Static Blue. How are you feeling about this and what else is on the horizon for Palm Beach?
It's gonna be wild, I speak on behalf of myself and Parker on this one like we're very excited for it - hopefully there's a good audience who aren't scared of getting a little sweaty. It bums me out when people come to our shows and just stand there and don't have fun but I guess that's up to them. The future for us looks amazing - we're releasing a few more demos over the summer hopefully and also announcing another headline show soon. Then at the back end of the year maybe we'll put some money into studio time and stuff which is exciting. We have so many songs just sitting around waiting to be recorded so as soon as we get them out the way we can start progressing as a band. We have a bassist joining us too very soon, maybe it'll give us a stronger sound - we have so much stuff coming this year it's just one big exciting waiting game. But for now we're focused on our upcoming shows - they're the fun part.
