Despite only performing a small handful of gigs, North Shields alt-rock group 'Blesh' have released their debut and eponymous E.P.
The E.P. opens with the track 'Fell For It', which starts with a sweet, melodic guitar lick, akin to the style of Mac DeMarco. The guitar is then reinforced with punchy percussion, a strong bass line and lilting vocals, elevating it to a catchy indie pop-rock track. This is best shown through the band's clever use of pauses and simple lyrics to create a dramatic and engaging chorus.
The following track 'Swings and Roundabouts', is the catchiest and most accessible track of the E.P. It opens with an intricate guitar lick and ebullient drums, before taking an heavier turn through gorgeously distorted guitar and dynamic vocals. The song is fuelled through the infectiously catchy lyrics, the most poignant of which are: 'swings and roundabouts, are not what I'm about' and 'I'm not one, to say I'm wrong, but I know today, that I'm right / I''ll be OK". The drops in this song reveal the more garage-esque side to their music, yet maintain the pop vibe that enables the song to be an easy listen and will lead to hyped-up and dancing crowds.
The penultimate track; 'Bingo Strippers', is the strongest track on the E.P. From the punchy staccato intro, to the indulgent guitar solo, to the bold drop (which serves as the outro and is undeniably the highlight of the E.P.), this song epitomises the energy and skill of the group, channeled through the richer and fuller sound.
Although the more upbeat guitar style is good, I feel as though this track radiates a more authentic and edgy vibe, giving the band a more original and hearty sound. The overall sound of the song is akin to a poppier, cleaner version of Nirvana, especially the daring and ballsy vocals.
Concluding the EP, is 'Fruit'. The listener is immediately submerged into a blanket of fuzzy , loud guitar before embracing yet more witty lyrics, delivered through lilting and sassy vocals. The melody is fairly similar to previous track, allowing the EP to flow nicely, whilst providing a comprehensive sound for the group.
In a very short amount of time, BLESH have mastered the art of balancing: distorted guitars, quirky lyrics and punchy percussion, creating a sound that will undoubtedly please crowds at their upcoming (and first) headline gig with NOUVEAU GIGS.
