Kicking off at the Dog and Parrot on Friday night was Benn2n and BobbyH, a two-piece composed of a singer/guitarist/decks and a rapper. Their sound was characterised by their loud beats and raw (and often expectedly Geordie) lyrics. It's obvious that these lads are very passionate about their music and have a lot to say for themselves. If the duo tighten up their lyrics, (maybe switching some of their more crass lines for something a little more sophisticated) they could deliver their message in a more effective manner and really fulfil their potential.
Second up was the uber-cool sound of SoShe, a mellow blend of R'n'b with pop influences. The suave trio combined smooth vocals, aggressive drums and rich guitar to create a sexy chilled vibe. Their vocalist Dayna captivated the room with her gorgeous tone that is powerful yet soothing. Their music as a whole possesses so many strong elements - from bold drum beats to mellifluous vocals to catchy guitar riffs (which they should emphasise in future songs to ensure variety in their set). SoShe radiate a cool, chilled vibe and will undoubtedly resonate with vast audiences - I look forward to seeing more from this group!
Next up was gritty rock group Reykjavik Kids. A heavy blend dynamic bass lines, dark edgy guitar and vivacious drums.Their sound was heightened by the melodic vocals which resembled an angrier Kieran Shudall from Circa Waves. However this similar tone was outshone by the angst fuelled belting of the vocals. The group's bridges also contrasted their ballsy rock sound, channelling a somewhat more upbeat and slightly indie vibe. This enabled their music to have a dancey edge, however this was just an undertone and this group are without a doubt a loud rock group - as evidenced by their shotgun guitar riffs and bellicose vocals. The combination of both these vibes, will allow the band to enthral a variety of audiences, as they did on Friday night.
Headlining the night was LA four-piece Happy Hollows, proving that classic rock is far from dead and is here to stay. Fronted by Sarah Negahdari, a vixen with a booming voice, that sounded like the love child of Stevie Knicks and Robert Plant.The band possess this beautifully iconic vibe, yet cement originality in their music through their catchy and full bodied riffs. Their sound had the a punky twist (but in tune and executed with technical flair), resembling a more melodic Wolf Alice. Their intricate guitar riffs were heightened by the ebullient drums and beefy bass lines that fuelled the gorgeous crescendos and ballsy choruses of their music. I've already downloaded their album and I suggest you do the same!
