'Midnight Girl' is the latest single from Hull based psyche rock group The Froot (previously known as 'The Froot '67').
The track opens with a distorted guitar riff and a rattling tambourine, before welcoming punchy drums and hazy, lilting vocals - submerging the listener in an ethereal yet upbeat sound.
One of the best aspects of the track is how effective the simple 60s rock inspired riffs and harmonies blend together, producing an authentic, definitive sound.
Modern psyche groups sometimes try too hard to be different or to fulfill the tropes of the genre, which often translates as a little pretentious. However The Froot have grounded the track with gritty, yet uber catchy riffs and a no frills chorus of: "I wanna see you in the dusk, my midnight girl".
The simple chorus allows a first time listener to sing and dance along, cementing the track as an effervescent addition to their live set. It's a solid rock track that showcases an apparent flair for songwriting, whilst remaining an easy, entertaining listen.
Also, the video for the track is definitely worth a watch. The concept for the video came from the band's manager, Mike Spurgeon and is a mashup of the band performing and clips all things reminiscent of the late 60's psychedelia scene - with many of the shots being dominated by vibrant kaleidoscopes.
Overall, the track is a very catchy and engaging. The Froot never fail to produce high quality psyche-rock tracks, which is such a refreshing change from 'plinky-plonky indie' that saturates the alternative rock scene.
The band have achieved a sound that is unique to them, whilst channeling a wonderfully nostalgic vibe that will transport listeners to a time of paisley shirt and corduroy flares - and no I don't mean Popworld on a Friday night.
